Between the visitors center and the southern trail head are some very nice open spaces good for wasting time (reading, having a picnic, relaxing, etc.).
The trail skirts Lake Washington, passes under 520, touches Foster Island, and traverses Marsh Island. Even mid-summer the trail gets muddy, but it's still worth visiting on a nice day.
The Marsh Island portion of the trail is, naturally, the muddiest portion of the trail, but it also has an intriguing quality to it. The trees/brush are so dense that it feels like a tunnel.
